Metadata correction proposals – Addressed by Logos

Special Issues

• Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia : SESB 2.0 Version - BHSSESB and BHSSESB2 have exactly identical metadata. Extremely confusing!
  • This is an odd case, so I’m leaving this explanation here where it’s a little more visible. As you may have guessed, these two resources have the same metadata because they are the same book. It’s the digital equivalent of having two copies on your shelf. Why the duplication? Well, BHSSESB is an older resource, created to be used with Libronix and optimized for that purpose. It’s so old that when faced with the task of updating the code to play nice with Logos 5, it was actually easier to make a new one. Everyone who buys the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia 2.0 gets the new one from here on out, and everyone who already had BHSSESB got BHSSESB2 automatically.
  • Textually, though, they’re identical, hence the identical metadata. If it’s a serious annoyance for you, there are ways to hide resources in your library so you won’t get the double listing. You still own the license for both, and you can unhide a hidden book at any time. ~Hayley Price

General Issues

• Ancient manuscripts: Ancient texts translated into English are best tagged as type:ancient manuscript; lang:English
  • “Ancient manuscript” is reserved for transcriptions of ancient manuscripts. Modern translations don’t fall into this category.
• Bible commentaries vs Bible notes: Resources that comment on every verse of the Bible should be tagged as commentaries, those that comment briefly on some verses only, or which title themselves “Study Bible” should be tagged bible-notes.
  • Logos’ use of these types is primarily functional rather than descriptive. The Commentary type is used for many different kinds of resources that are indexed by Bible verse and that the user may want to appear in the Passage Guide. Bible Notes are used for the Notes from a Bible, as, for instance, most of our “Study Bible” resources. Further breakdown of the Commentary category would be somewhat arbitrary, so it’s better left to user discretion via tags.
• All Lexicons should have appropriate ancient language as well as lang:English
  • The language of a book is the primary language it is written in rather than the language it is about, so a Hebrew lexicon written in English is English, not Hebrew. A Greek grammar written in Spanish is Spanish, not Greek, etc.

• Journals: There’s a bunch of journals without the series tag. Semeia, Tyndale Bulletin and the Evangelical Review of Theology are the main culprits, but there are many others (BibSac vol 165, for example). Filter the library by type:journal and sort by series to see them all.
  • All journals should now have series titles visible in the library pane.
• Authors and Publishers are listed multiple times with slightly different spelling (sort the library by author/publisher to see them).
  • A lengthy author and publisher standardization project has reduced duplicate author and publisher names considerably.
• Publishers with widely used abbreviations (IVP for InterVarsity Press) – please include the abbreviation in parentheses
  • We now have standardized publisher names in place. Many of the publishers with widely used abbreviations are referred to by those abbreviations in the library, and should be searchable by them.
• Publication Date is a mixture of digital publishing date, copyright date, original/revision date whilst a single date for the original/revision is preferred.
  • Publication date fields with more than one year listed have been corrected to display the appropriate year. A notable exception: multivolume works published over a number of years and collected into a single resource are represented by multi-year ranges.
• Subjects content should be consistent e.g. include only the Secondary language (Greek, Hebrew, or Latin) & omit the Primary language which is tagged separately.
  • Logos is working on cleaning up inconsistencies. Subjects are derived from the Library of Congress subject headings. For lexicons, this is consistently of the form “Hebrew language—Dictionaries—English.”
• Vyrso Books have different standards than Logos editions. They are much less dynamic and are only lightly tagged. As a result:
  • Vyrso books don’t have subjects
  • Vyrso books don’t have embedded milestones
  • Vyrso books are all set to type:monograph. If there was an existing ‘trade book’ resource type we would be using that uniformly for all Vyrso books.

  • It looks like TEF Study Guides was renamed prior to this edition’s publication, so I’ve added the newer series name, SPCK International Study Guide, to all three. I’ve also updated the citations to reflect this series title and the revised edition’s publication information (after some headdesking). Regrettably, our series setup doesn’t like multiple series names, so I’ve had to leave out ‘Old Testament Introduction’ series for the time being. I’ll do a search of our library for more TEF and SPCK study guides as soon as I can devote the time to it.

• Lange’s Commentary (series) – publisher is listed as Logos, date 2008; but the series this Logos edition was made from was apparently published in New York by Bible House in 1868 and 1869 (see prefaces by the general editor, Philip Schaff, in the Genesis volume, Proverbs, and 1 & 2 Thessalonians); more research into the print edition on Logos’s shelves might be needed to get the date correct for each volume.
  • This is a weird one, so bear with me. We try not to create ‘Logos reprints’ of public domain resources anymore, but we occasionally leave Logos information in when updating it would cause problems. The format in which we released these resources do not match the formatting of the original texts: the volumes are split up differently. If we were to apply the original publisher name to this resources, the result would be bibliographic citations that describe books that never existed. Rather than have this potentially cause problems for students using our resources in academic papers, we’re leaving them as they are. At least this way a professor will be able to pinpoint exactly which edition of the commentaries their students used.
• Lexham Greek-English Interlinear Septuagints - coeditor should be David A. deSilva. Currently two lists David A deSilva, and two David A De Silva.

Other Corrections

• 131 Christians Everyone Should Know - includes headword index so type should be Encyclopedia, not Monograph
• I Corinthians: A New Translation, Introduction with a Study of the Life of Paul, Notes, and Commentary by William Orr & James Walther. Publication date (2008) is wrong. That’s the publication date of newer edition. This edition is copyright 1976 with no newer date mentioned inside the book.
  • The answer to this one is a little weird, so bear with me. There is a newer date mentioned in the book: “First Yale University Press impression 2008.” We don’t usually capture reimpression years as publication dates, but the series was being rebranded from “The Anchor Bible” to “The Anchor Yale Bible”, and we treated the books as new editions at the request of the publisher.
• The 365 Day Devotional Commentary -> remove Bible—Commentaries from Subjects [Stet. This book functions as commentary too.]
• 2,200 Quotations from the Writings of Charles H. Spurgeon Citation info should not have “Trade pbk. ed.” as this is the digital edition, not the trade paperback.
• A number of books in English have French or other foreign language subjects; these should be translated where English equivalents are not already included, or else just deleted; Logos does not pretend to be International in its subjects so it should consistently use English only (there are only very few exceptions currently): Apologia Pro Vita Sua (Apologétique); Atonement for a ‘Sinless’ Society (Postmodernisme.; Verzoening.; Zonde.); Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (Bible. • Amplified Bible - title in citation is a bit excessive “The Amplified Bible, Containing the Amplified Old Testament and the Amplified New Testament”; change to “The Amplified Bible” – the rest is obvious and nobody would actually put all that in a citation
• Analytical Handbook of the Greek Text of the Letter to the Philippians should be type: Bible Commentary
• Analytical Key to the Old Testament should not be type:bible (perhaps type:Bible Notes?)
• Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary needs abbreviated title (ABD is the standard)

  • Series titles are used for Logos editions, and not usually applied to Vyrso books.
• Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library - This is a collection, not a series. It should not have a series tag. There are, however, 3 real series within it that should have series tags.
  • This is actually not the case—’Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library’ is a true series, consisting of a finite number of resources, containing the series name and series numbering in the title pages of the books that constitute it, and recognized as a series by cataloguers such as the Library of Congress. It contains three ‘multivolume works’, which are handled differently than series. We often apply series titles to multivolume works for the sake of certain L4 functionalities it enables, but in a case like this, the true series title takes precedence. This ensures that the books in question are searchable by both the series name and the shared title of the multivolume work, which is present in the book title.

  • I have added the series title to as many of these as I could confirm. It’s not unheard of for a book to be republished in a new series, or outside of its original series. In cases like these we defer to the text of whatever edition we’re replicating, hence the one “The Complete Commentary on the New Testament” volume, and a couple of volumes whose series titles I am leaving blank.
• The Apocalypse of Baruch - missing author:Oesterley, W. O. E. (cf the info panel, and also the product page)
• The Apologetics Study Bible should be type:”Bible Notes”

• Arminianism v. Hyper-Calvinism has the author as “Samuel Cozens” - it should be “Philip Pugh”
• The Art of Caregiving author should be Michael S. Barry; currently it’s just “Barry”
• Augsburg - is spelled with lower case for Augsburg Commentary on the New Testament and Lenski’s Commentary on the New Testament series
  • This issue should be resolved, let us know if you see any extant instances.
• Baffled to Fight Better, Not Knowing Where (Whither), Shade of His Hand, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount (Oswald Chambers) – they are tagged as type:Bible Commentary with matching Subject information but they have no Reference box and no Index. I think they should be type:monograph with appropriate Subjects.
  • Because this doesn’t require adding or removing an index, this actually didn’t require a full resource update to implement. These changes have been made.
• Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics type:Dictionary should be Encyclopedia
• The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook is currently type:monograph, but it should be type:bible-commentary (just like Halley’s, Holman and Willmington’s Bible Handbooks)
• Beginning Biblical Hebrew should be type:grammar
• Believer’s Study Bible should be type:Bible Notes
• Believers Church Bible Commentary - capitalization is wrong for title of series in citation info in all volumes, Ephesians worse than others
• Believer’s Church Bible Commentary most volumes missing abbreviated title (should be Bible book name with BCBC in parentheses after)
• Believers Church Bible Commentary title and series name should not have apostrophe (it’s not there in the print edition)
• Berkhof Collection Six of the resources have 2009 as their publication date instead of the original publication date (this, by the way is also a problem with the Calvin series). The same six resources don’t have the original publisher listed.

• Bible History: Old Testament This volume is by Afred Edersheim. The author’s name ends with a period (.), which will cause the name to appear twice when sorting by author in the Library or in Collections.

  • Hmm. You’re definitely right that they should be the same. They’re not really lexicons, and they’re not quiiiiite grammars, so monograph will have to do. The title casing thing is part of a larger issue, so I’ll get to that separately.
• Byzantine/Majority Textform Greek New Testament - Language should be Greek only, not “English; Greek”
• CAL Targums - several resources have the correct title in the Alternate Title field, and the alternative title in the normal Title field
  • I’ve fixed as many of these as I can find. There are a few titles that include some additional text not present on the title page (to the Pentateuch, usually) and I’ve opted to leave that. Let me know if you see any egregious issues that I have missed here.
• Calvin’s Commentaries two volumes, Harmony of the Gospels and Harmony of the Gospels missing series
• Calvin’s Commentaries (Updated) on 1 & 2 Corinthians, Genesis, and John need their titles revised to match those of the rest of the series volumes

  • There are a couple of fiddly reasons why LNTS/JSNTSup and LHB/OTS/JSOTSup aren’t given series titles. It has to do with reprints that may or may not list the series title in their frontmatter, things going out of print, changing series names, and the sheer volume of works. However, every citation that lists JSOTSup or JSNTSup as a series now correctly lists ‘Supplement Series’ as part of that field.
• The Life of Jesus Christ by James Stalker: Book info panel has wrong description (evidently copied/pasted from The Life of Christ by F.W. Farrar)

  • This is a weird one, but it’s intentional. Because these books wind up split into separate language volumes (so you can scroll them together), the metadata gets split so that, say, the translator’s name is not on the resource that contains none of his translation. I grant you it’s a weird, choice, but we have guidelines in place for this series because it’s such a common issue.

  • This is a tricky one. The series page on Lit Press’s website lists the two CD Rom collections as its parts, not the individual dictionaries (hardcopies of which are also available via the website).   • As always, ‘commentary’ and ‘monograph’ have functional aspects that are currently determined by a book’s layout and milestones. It’s uneven, but it’s what we have to work with at the moment.
• NIDNTT and NIDOTTE should be type:Lexicon not Encyclopedia [Lengthy articles nets it the ‘Encyclopedia’ designation]
• Norman Whybray == R. N. Whybray? (his more complete name is R. Norman Whybray; should list him that way consistently)
  • The author is overwhelmingly credited as R. N. Whybray, in books and in author authority lists, so that’s what we’re going with.
• Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, Volumes 1 & 2 - abbreviated titles should be OTP1 and OTP2 (not OT Pseud V1 and OT Pseud V2), as these are the standard abbreviations for these texts in the literature. Also probably OT Pseud V1 Alt should be changed to OTP1 Alt.

  • All resources contain the series title “Preacher’s Complete Homiletic Commentary”, which matches the format of the series title on the title page.
• A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians (full title “A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians, Contrasted with Real Christianity”) is better known as “Real Christianity”; either use the full title so that a search for “Real Christianity” in one’s library will find it, or put “Real Christianity” as the default short title (preferably the latter regardless of whether you decide to do the former or not)
  • This seemed like a good fit for the ‘alternate title’ field. That should resolve the searchability problems.
• The Prayer Book Dictionary - should be type Encyclopedia, not Dictionary
• Pressure Points series: three of them (Standing Fast; A Voice in the Wilderness; Who’s In Charge?) are missing the descriptive text saying which volume they are in the series [Only two of the six books reference the order they are in the series at any point in the body of their text. Numbering the volumes doesn’t seem to be a big priority to the authors, and trying to fill in the blanks would require too much guesswork on our part.]
• Revelation - several books have this title and it should be unique e.g. Ryrie’s could be titled Everyman’s Bible Commentary: Revelation and Krodel’s could be Augsberg Commentary on the New Testament: Revelation.
  • We have a LOT of commentaries with similar or identical names, and we have them because a lot of commentaries have been published with similar or identical names. There’s a limit to how comfortable we are altering the titles of resources, and we have opted to roll with most of these. They’re distinguishable by series title and author names, same as they would be if you had hardcopies sitting next to eachother on the shelf.
• Revelation:Unlocking the Scriptures for You, is Type Monograph. It should be Type Bible Commentary
  • One of the qualities we use to define Commentaries is that they are organized by bible verse (in one way or another). Revelation: Unlocking the Scriptures for You by Alger Fitch is completely organized by topic and not verse. The other volume on Revelation in the Unlocking the Scriptures series, by Lewis Foster, is organized by verse, and is indexed and designated a commentary accordingly.
• Romans: A Commentary (Hermeneia volume) Citation needs the “A” after the colon capitalized.
• Romans Through History and Culture Series - missing series name (one 4 vol collection + at least one separate volume)
  • Series title added—let me know if Greek Patristic and Eastern Orthodox Interpretations of Romans wasn’t the fifth volume you were thinking of. Things like this can be tough to track down.

• Swedish resources - All seem to have publisher:SN Ljud & Data. That’s the electronic publisher. It seems more appropriate to show the original publisher, especially for books that are still under copyright.
• Swedish resources - Most seem to have the epub date in the Publication Date column instead of the Electronic Publication Date column. Please insert correct years in both columns.
  • The metadata for these resources reflect SN Ljud & Data’s electronic resources because that is how we licensed and received these resources. This way the publication information is accurate to the edition we have reproduced for Logos sales.

Souter was merely the translator.   • The relevant factoid here is that the Vine’s Topic Finder is linked to dictionary locations, not bible locations. Our resource type is specifically Bible Concordances.

  • Confirmed separate people.

  • I can’t confirm the first name of W. Farmer (I know, right? Weird) but it looks like these two authors works were written centuries apart. It may be best to leave them separate.

  • Confirmed to be the same person.

• Macmillan == MacMillan == Macmillan and Co. == Macmillan Co.?
  • Macmillan Co. and Macmillan and Co. are actually separate publishers. The camel-casing is slowly being brought under control.
• WELS Board for Parish Education == Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod?
• Victor == Victor Books?
  • Confirmed as two separate publishers.

Missing/Incorrect Subjects

• El Antiguo Testamento: Un Comentario Sobre Su Historia y Literatura should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered.
  • The largest chunk of the bible we break down into books is Minor Prophets. Whole Testament resources get whole testament subjects.
• Apologia Pro Vita Sua - subjects should be in English, not part French
• Be Amazed, Be Concerned, Be Heroic (3 Vols) – replace O.T.Minor Prophets with subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
• The Bible Guide should have Bible—Commentaries instead of “Bible—Introductions”
• Bible History:Old Testament - “O.T.—Historical” is incorrect for this commentary. Its Subject should cover the bible books it contains as it doesn’t reflect all the books of the OT.
  • The way we are currently applying subjects is that we stop listing individual books once we hit Testament-level. Also, commentary is a partly functional definition within Logos, thus confusing the issue further.
• Cecil Sherman Formations Commentary (5 vols.) should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
• Charles Simeon’s Horae Homileticae should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
