What is the Pronunciation tool?

  • The Pronunciation tool will speak Greek and Hebrew words (lemmas) that you type in or select from a list.
    • The lemma words are those which you would find in a dictionary.
  • It also speaks English (transliterated) words that are used in Factbook.

Opening the Pronunciation tool

  1. In the top menu, click on Tools.
  2. In the drop down menu, click on Pronunciation.
  3. Logos will open the Pronunciation tool window on the right side of the main window.

Using the Pronunciation Tool

Selecting and hearing a word

  • This is the simplest and obvious way to use the tool.
    1. Find your word in the Pronunciation window.
      (Don’t forget that the vertical slider on the right side of the window can be used)

    2. Once found, click on the word
      (make sure that you have the windows volume turned up loud enough to hear it).
      You will hear the word spoken.

Entering a word via the Keyboard

Dragging a word to the Find box

  1. The Lexicon is open to a word you want pronounced.
  2. If there is anything in the Find box of Pronunciation click on the X on the right side of the Find box to clear it.
  3. Select the word in the lexicon, then drag it to the Find box of the Pronunciation window.
  4. In the Pronunciation window locate the word and click on it.
    Logos will pronounce the word for you.

Changing the Style of Pronunciation

Logos provides several Styles of pronunciation:

  • Greek Erasmian – this is the Ancient Greek phonology
  • Greek Koine – the Greek of the New Testament and the Septuagint.
  • Greek Modern – the modern style.
  • Aramaic – the Aramaic of the Old Testament (a few books only)
  • Hebrew – the Hebrew of the Old Testament.
  • English – Factbook entries
  1. Click on the menu in the Pronunciation toolbar.
  2. Click on the desired pronunciation Style in the list.

  3. Now when you click on words you will hear the selected pronunciation style.

Using Pronunciation from a Resource

You can have Logos pronounce a word without using the Pronunciation tool.

  1. If you are using a Reverse Interlinear bible, right click on a word.
  2. In the pop-up Context menu on the shaded side select Lemma.
  3. Then on the other side of the menu click on Pronounce.

Using Pronunciation from a Tool/Guide

In some tools you may see a speaker icon next to a Greek word.

  • In the Information window.
    1. Ensure Word Info and its Lemma are selected
    2. Click/Hover over a word in a reverse interlinear or Greek/Hebrew resource.
    3. Click the speaker icon to have Logos pronounce the word.

  • In Bible Word Study.
    1. Enter a Greek or Hebrew word.
    2. Click the speaker icon to have Logos pronounce the word.

  • So whenever you see the speaker icon you can click on it to hear the word pronounced. You will find that the Greek Style used is Koine.

Pronunciation Tables

Logos provides pronunciation tables which could be helpful to you.

  1. Click on the Information button on the right side of the toolbar (an i inside a circle)
  2. The pronunciation tables will appear relative to the selected Style.
  3. To hide this pronunciation table, click on the Done button.
