Updated for Logos version 23+

This wiki page will offer some suggestions on how you may improve the response of the Logos application. This may be useful to those who have an older slower computer, or a large library, or those who have a large number of collections as Logos could be sluggish when navigating your resources. This list is probably not an exhaustive list of speed up suggestions.

Page Contents

Limit/disable Emphasize Active References

The Emphasize Active References feature requires Logos to scan each resource that you have open. You may not need it On all the time, so you could disable it in the Visual Filter menu until such time that you need it. And even then turn it On only in the resource that you would like to see your references highlighted.

  • To turn Off this feature
  1. Click on the Visual Filter menu icon in the toolbar of an open resource.
  2. In the drop down menu right click on Emphasize Active References. (another pop-up menu will appear)
  3. In the pop-up menu click on Do not show in any resources.

Limit/disable Corresponding Selection

The Corresponding Selection feature requires Logos to identify your selected text to original languages in all resources where you have this turned On. You could keep this turned Off until you specifically needed to use it.

  • To turn Off this feature
  1. Click on the Visual Filter menu icon in the toolbar of an open resource.
  2. In the drop down menu right click on Corresponding Selection.
  3. In the pop-up menu click on Do not show in any resources.

Limit/disable visible Notes and Highlights

Changes can be affected via the Notes and Highlights VF. But you might also turn Off notebooks under Corresponding Notes and Highlights.

  • To turn Off this feature
  1. Click on the Visual Filter Menu icon in the toolbar of an open resource and locate the Notes and Highlights heading, also Notes and Highlights (Corresponding).
  2. Right click on each notebook that you want to hide
  3. In the pop-up menu that appears click on Do not show in any resources.

Limit/disable visible Reading Plans

The Reading Plans feature requires Logos to identify each reading plan and show its markers. If you are not reading in your plan then there is no reason to show these.

  • To turn Off this feature
  1. Click on the Visual Filter menu icon in the toolbar of an open resource.
  2. In the drop down menu right click on each Reading plan that you want to hide. (another pop-up menu will appear)
  3. In the pop-up menu click on Do not show in any resources.

Limit/disable Visual Filters

The Visual Filter feature requires Logos to identify each Visual Filter document and show its highlighting in the selected resources. So it is not sufficient to turn Off a filter via the Visual Filter menu. You need to delete VF’s that you don’t need.
You could significantly improve your load times by not using the * (asterisk) wildcard character to search for anything, and by limiting the number of resources that you apply to each filter.

Reduce the number of Linked resources

You could reduce the number of resources that you have linked together. You might try unlinking resources that you are not viewing often and then temporarily link them to bring them back in line when you do view them.

  • How to do this

  1. In resources which you want to unlink, click on the resource’s icon to open its menu.
  2. Click on None for the Link Set.

Reduce the number of similar resources & use Parallel Books

You could reduce the number of resources that you have open for similar types e.g. Commentaries, Lexicons, Dictionaries. Then when you want to view another resource of that similar type you can use the Parallel Book sets feature in the toolbar to allow you to view another resource of this type in the same tab.

  • How to use this feature
  1. Open your favorite resource for each type e.g. a commentary, a dictionary and a lexicon.
  2. Click the Parallel Book sets icon in the toolbar.
  3. In the drop down menu click on the similar resource that you want to view.
  4. Click on the Back arrow to return.

Reduce the number and complexity of Collections

Collections have to be evaluated from time to time by the application, especially when it is loading. Reducing their number will help, so be selective in what you get via your Faithlife Groups.
Many collections for commentaries have been found to have a very large number of Author names as part of their rules, and these take an appreciable time for Logos to evaluate.
It would be more efficient to tag these resources e.g. first filter your Library using the original collection.

Change Information window to use On Click

If you keep the Information tool open then you might have notice the spinning circle a lot as you move your mouse around in different resources. Logos is trying to keep up real time with which word that your mouse is over and update the information tool. You can change the settings for your Information tool so that it only updates when you click (single click) on a word. This can offer some speed increase in your Logos experience.

  • How to use this feature

  1. In your Information window’s toolbar click on Settings.
  2. In the drop down menu click on click to select it. Now when you click on a word in another resource Logos will populate the Information window.

Turn Off Follow in many of the Tools

In several of the Tools if you have it linked as Follow then Logos tries to keep these tools up to date with where you are viewing in your Bible. This can use significant time depending on how the tool is setup. Some of these tools are Cited By, Power Lookup, Explorer, Text Comparison, and Copy Bible Verse. Their default linking is set to Follow. If you turn the linking Off for these you can often just paste the scripture reference in the box for each tool as needed.

  • How to use this feature

  1. In your tool’s window click on the upside down triangle icon in the upper left corner to open its menu.
  2. In the drop down menu click on None for Link set to disable the Follow linking.

Keep Note & Clipping files you are not using closed

Close tabs for Notes/Notebooks and Clippings that you are not using as this may help speed up Logos, especially if you have several thousand individual Notes or Clipping docs.

Improving Guides speed

  • You can create a Custom Guide with fewer sections in the guide.
  • Remove sections which require Internet access e.g. SermonAudio.com, SermonCentral.com.
  • If you use a narrower verse range in the Range box the guides will perform faster.
  • There are some tips for the Exegetical Guide in the wiki page Speeding up the Exegetical Guide.

Clear History

Several Logos users have reported that clearing History speeds up responsiveness:
