What are Logos Smart Tags?

“Smart Tags” (now called “Actions”) are a feature of Microsoft Office that allow you to perform actions within the Office application that would normally require you to open another application.

When you type a bible reference in your Office document Logos Smart Tags will recognise that reference and you will be able to:

  1. replace the typed reference with the text of the passage
  2. open the passage in your preferred bible in Logos
  3. open Copy Bible Verses in Logos for additional formatting before pasting the passage text in your document
  4. open a Passage Guide for the passage

Note: When using the “Replace With Passage” action, Smart Tags will only insert plain text. If you want to insert formatted text then you must use the “Copy Bible Verses” action.

Requirements for Using Logos Smart Tags

In order to use Smart Tags you must have Logos 4.1 or higher on Windows with Office 2003 or later. Smart Tags for 32-bit Office are installed as part of the Logos installation.
A version of the Smart Tag for 64-bit Office may also be installed (see below) but 64-bit Windows users are recommended to install the 32-bit version.
The Logos Smart Tag doesn’t work in PowerPoint 2010 or later.
Smart Tags are not supported in Mac versions of Office.

Using Logos Smart Tags

In Office 2010 and later Smart Tags are called “Actions” and are not shown in the document by default. To enable the action:

  1. In the File menu, select Options, then Add-ins
  2. In the Manage box at the bottom, select Actions, then click Go...
  3. Check Enable additional actions... and Logos Bible Software (Bible references)
  4. Click OK

Optionally:

  1. Right-click anywhere in the Word document and choose Additional Actions (if available)
  2. Select Options...
  3. Check Enable additional actions... and Logos Bible Software (Bible references)
  4. Click OK

To use the Logos Smart Tag:

  1. Enter a Bible reference with first letter Capitalized
    • e.g. type 1 Sam and not 1 sam
  2. Right-click the text and open the Additional Actions submenu
  3. Select the required action.

Troubleshooting Smart Tags

Note that Smart Tags are deprecated by Microsoft and unsupported by Faithlife.
So if this troubleshooting information does not resolve your issue check the Desktop forums regarding the current availability of Smart Tags.

Initial Checks

  1. Ensure you are running Logos/Verbum/Noet in Windows.
  2. Ensure you have Office 2003 or later for Windows.
  3. The Smart Tag doesn’t work in PowerPoint 2010 or later (but does work in earlier versions of PowerPoint).
  4. If applicable, uninstall Logos Smart Tags for Libronix from Window’s Control Panel.
  5. Ensure both Logos and your Office application are running, and that they are not running in Administrator mode.
  6. Ensure Smart Tags are enabled in your version of Office.
    • Note that Smart Tags (Actions) are deprecated by Microsoft, and may not work on current versions of Office.

Using Powershell to fix Smart Tags

Logos 6 and higher are 64-bit programs so you will experience problems if you recently upgraded from 32-bit Logos 4 or Logos 5 on a 64-bit Windows system.
You may also experience problems after upgrading to a higher version e.g. from v7 to v8.

On most Windows versions, PowerShell comes with script execution disabled by default, so you should set the PowerShell execution policy to allow script execution:

  1. Run PowerShell as Administrator (Windows+S key, type PowerShell, right-click on Windows PowerShell in the list and choose Run as administrator.
  2. In the PowerShell window, type Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned <Enter>. Type Y <Enter> to make the change.

Run the Powershell script:

  1. Download the RegisterSmartTags.ps1 script from http://downloads.logoscdn.com/LBS6/Support/RegisterSmartTags.ps1.
  2. In Windows Explorer, find the script in your downloads folder (e.g. C:\Users\Dave\Downloads), right-click on the script and choose Run with PowerShell. Since the script is signed by Logos Bible Software, choose Open from the Open File – Security Warning dialog, if displayed.
  3. Note: if you do not see Run with PowerShell in the context menu, open a PowerShell window as described below under Verbum and Noet but run the script without any switches i.e. type .\RegisterSmartTags.ps1 <Enter>
  4. The script calls RegSvr32.exe to register the Logos Smart Tags dll, L4SmrtTg.dll, which should display a RegSvr32 dialog message similar to, “DllRegisterServer in C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\Logos\System\L4SmrtTg.dll succeeded.”, click OK.
  5. The PowerShell window should list details about registering, ending with the message “Finished successfully. Hit a key to exit...”.
Logos Smart Tags for 32-bit Office should now be registered.
  6. If you see an error message, such as “Failed to...”, please create a bug thread in the appropriate forum e.g. Logos 8.

Verbum and Noet:

You can also register Smart Tags for Verbum and Noet. To do this, you need to specify a command line switch in a PowerShell window:

  1. Open PowerShell (press Windows+S key, type PowerShell in the Search box and click the Windows PowerShell entry in the list).
  2. To change directories to your download folder, type: cd <path-to-download-folder> <Enter> e.g. cd C:\Users\Dave\Downloads <Enter>
  3. To run the script with the command line switch, type: .\RegisterSmartTags.ps1 -Verbum <Enter> or .\RegisterSmartTags.ps1 -Noet <Enter>
  4. The output should be similar to registering Logos (above).

Smart Tags for 64-bit Office

If you installed the 64-bit version of Office 2010 or later, run the above Powershell script in a Powershell window to register the 64-bit Smart Tag.
Type:
 .\RegisterSmartTags.ps1 -Office64Bit <Enter>

To register it with Verbum type:
 .\RegisterSmartTags.ps1 -Office64Bit -Verbum <Enter>

If the 64-bit Smart Tag is not installed you will see a message like:
Failed to find 64 bit Office Smart Tags dll: ...
This file can be downloaded from: https://downloads.logoscdn.com/LBS6/Support/LSmtTg64.dll
It should be copied to the path: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\System

—> download the Smart Tag, move it to the path indicated and run the script again.

If you cannot use Powershell, download LSmtTg64.dll as above and run this command in a Command Prompt:
regsvr32 “%LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\System\LSmtTg64.dll”

An Alternative for MAC and other Windows applications users

If you are a MAC user or use other Windows applications besides Office then you should use the Copy Bible Verses panel for pasting a verse or passage into your document. Please note that Microsoft has not included Smart Tags functionality in Microsoft OneNote and so if you are using this application you would also need to use the copy bible verses panel.
Another alternative is to use the “Replace with Passage” service as discussed at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/30583.aspx.
