What are Logos Smart Tags?

“Smart Tags” are a feature of Microsoft Office that allow you to perform actions within the office application that would normally require you to open another application.

When you type a bible reference in your office document Logos smart tags will recognise that reference and you will be able to:

  • replace the typed reference with the text of the passage
  • open up the passage in your preference bible in Logos
  • open the copy bible verses panel for additional formatting options before pasting the passage text in your document

Note: When using the replace with Passage action, Logos Smart Tag will only insert plain text. If you want to insert formatted text then you must use the Copy Bible Verses action

Requirements for Using Logos Smart Tags

In order to use Smart Tags you must have Logos 4.1 or higher on Windows and Office 2003 or later. Smart Tags for 32-bit Office are installed as part of the Logos installation. A version of the Smart Tag for 64-bit Office can be installed manually (see below) but 64-bit Windows users are recommended to install the 32-bit version.
The Logos Smart Tag doesn’t work in PowerPoint 2010 or later.
Smart Tags are not supported in Mac versions of Office.

Smart Tags for 64-bit Office

For Office 2010 or later download LSmtTg64.dll to a convenient location and install it from a Command Prompt with regsvr32 C:\Path\to\LSmtTg64.dll. It should display a dialog box saying DllRegisterServer succeeded. See this thread for more details.

Smart Tags and 64-bit Logos

Logos 6 is 64-bit and it installs the Smart Tag for 32-bit Office. If you are having problems then try this PowerShell approach.

If you are confident to do it manually start by running these commands in a Command Prompt:

  1. “%LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\Logos.exe” /register
  2. regsvr32 “%LOCALAPPDATA%\Logos\System\L4SmrtTg.dll” (see above for 64-bit Office)

Note 1 the \Logos\ folder could be \Logos4\, \Logos5\ or \Verbum\ for your installation.
Note 2 the \System\ folder for v6.3+ is replaced with a folder like \\. If more than one use the latest.

If that doesn’t work troubleshoot as follows (requires familiarity with the Windows Registry):

  1. Does “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{319A0316-DF84-4B3C-8117-349B7E98E613}” exist? If so, delete it.
  2. “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{81490292-5570-4D02-A2AC-7B828DBD0A8A}\1.0\0\win64” should exist and contain the path to LogosCom.exe.
  3. If “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{81490292-5570-4D02-A2AC-7B828DBD0A8A}\1.0\0\win32” exists, delete it.

An Alternative for MAC and other Windows applications users

If you are a MAC user or use other Windows applications besides Office then you should use the Copy Bible Verses panel for pasting a verse or passage into your document. Please note that Microsoft has not included Smart Tags functionality in Microsoft OneNote and so if you are using this application you would also need to use the copy bible verses panel.
Another alternative is to use the “Replace with Passage” service as discussed at

Troubleshooting Smart Tags

  1. Ensure you are running the correct version of Logos i.e. 4.1 or higher in Windows.
  2. Ensure you have the correct version of Office installed i.e. Office 2003 or later for Windows.
  3. The Smart Tag doesn’t work in PowerPoint 2010 or later (but does work in earlier versions of PowerPoint).
  4. If applicable, uninstall Logos Smart Tags for Libronix from Window’s Control Panel.
  5. Ensure both Logos and your Office application are running and that they are not running in Administrator mode.
  6. Ensure Smart Tags are enabled in your version of Office. For detailed steps on doing this see the Logos Bible Software Support Article
