Screenshot



From time to time you may be asked to attach a screenshot of the issue you are seeing. Screenshots are usually displayed by Forum software as pictures within your text. However, just pasting a screenshot into your text won’t work. Instead, you upload a picture file as an attachment to your text so it will be shown graphically.

Taking a Screenshot

Tools Built Into the Operating System

Mac

  1. macOS and OS X have screen capture keyboard shortcuts Shift + Control + Command + 3 (or 4) copies screen image (or selected portion) to clipboard. Alternative is using Grab utility to capture Window, Selection, Screen, OR Timed Screen. Then copy screen capture to clipboard. Apple Support has “Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac”.
  2. Open (or switch to) Preview application. Preview has several graphical editing capabilities – including annotating, cropping, and rotating.
  3. File Menu => New from Clipboard
  4. File Menu => Save As
  5. Save image in PNG format for Forum posting or use JPG format for Wiki pages

Windows

  1. Find the “Print Screen” key (it may be labelled PrtSc/PrntScr). Press Alt + PrtSc to put a copy of the active window in the clipboard buffer.
  2. Then open Microsoft Paint, or some other graphics editor.
  3. In the menu click EDIT>PASTE to paste the contents of the clipboard to your new graphic.
  4. Choose FILE>>SAVE AS
  5. Save the file with a meaningful name as a JPG, GIF or PNG file (not BMP/Bitmap as they are too large).

Windows Quick Screenshot

  1. Hold down the “Windows” key + the “Print Screen” key. On tablets use “Windows” + “Volume Down”
    (your screen will darken for a split second, then...)
  2. You will discover a “Screenshot” file in the Screenshots folder of your Pictures Library.

Windows Snipping Tool

   Windows 7/8/9/10, Vista, and Experience Pack for Windows XP Tablet include a program called Snipping tool. Loading it automatically gives you a “cross hairs” so you can select the area of your screen to grab along with basic editing ability. Microsoft Support has “Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots”

Windows 10 Snip & Sketch

   Windows 10 newer screenshot app is Snip & Sketch, which has keyboard shortcut “Windows” + “Shift” + “S” so can select a portion of screen for copy to clipboard. Microsoft Support has “How to take and annotate screenshots on Windows 10”

Jing / Techsmith Capture

  Many forum users use Jing - now replaced by Techsmith Capture - for screen captures. Free version will do both image and video captures of specific areas of your screen. You can then do minor edits if necessary, such as includiong arrows and boxes. You can then upload to the free webspace they provide, paste into Amber or save the capture locally on your computer.

Attaching a Screenshot

Uploading Screenshot to the Forum via Paperclip icon

requires locally saved screenshot file in png or jpg format

  1. Hit reply to respond to a message (or create a new message). You can’t upload screenshots using Quick Reply.
  2. Locate paperclip icon and click it
  3. This will bring up a dialog to Insert Media.
  4. Click Browse to locate your image, adust the Max width if you want to change scaling (not normally necessary).
  5. click INSERT.
  6. Voila!

Uploading Screenshot to the Forum using Amber

assumes screenshot copied in clipboard

  1. Hit reply to respond to a message (or create a new message). You can’t upload screenshots using Quick Reply.
  2. Locate Amber icon and click it
  3. This will bring up the Amber upload dialog
  4. Click into right half of Amber screen, then hit Ctrl+V to paste your image, which will automatically upload to Faithlife’s Amber cloud storage
  5. click INSERT.
  6. Voila!
